The numbers are in.

Golf rounds played in across the U.S. were up again, year-over-year, in September and October, continuing a mercurial rise that began in May once courses around the country reopened amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

A few months ago, it was easy to attribute golf’s gain to other activities still being shuttered, particularly youth sports, live events and movie theaters.

But with many cities and states and fully reopened, it’s clear the sport’s growth is also due to other factors. New golfers are sticking with it, experienced golfers are playing more, and the weather throughout most the country has been abnormally warm this fall.

Especially here in the Carolinas, where high temps have been in the 70s to start November. While we’re expecting rain here over the next couple of days, the latter part of the month is trending toward ideal golf weather.

And Cherokee Valley Course and Club is ready.

Playing Amid the Green

Bias aside, Cherokee Valley is a unique place to experience fall golf. The P.B. Dye-designed layout was just named one of the “Six Can’t Miss Courses in the Upstate” by Discover South Carolina. And while it takes a minute for our northern transplants to get used to, there’s no off-season here.

“Our overseeded tee boxes and fairways set us apart from other courses in the region and make the fall and winter an amazing time to play the course,” says owner Matt Jennings. “Most area courses will go dormant over the next couple of weeks as the Bermuda grass browns out. There’s just something to be said for playing golf on freshly mown green grass.”

Especially when that verdant turf contrasts with the billowing big blue skies of Greenville County’s Blue Ridge region. There’s no better place to experience this combination than on the par-3 eighth hole, with its unobstructed view of Glassy Mountain.

Featuring a 70-foot drop from the black tees to the green, No. 8 was recently named one of the best par 3s in the Upstate by Discover South Carolina. And it’s not just the downhill holes that offer stunning views at Cherokee Valley.

The layout’s breathtaking back nine gets underway in earnest with the par-5 13th hole. This brawny three-shotter rises a staggering 120 feet from tee to green and is hemmed in on either side by towering Carolina hardwood trees.

“Golfers get four decidedly different fall golf experiences playing 18 holes at Cherokee Valley,” Jennings says. “The first six holes on the south side of Highway 129 feel like a prelude to mountain golf. The next four holes on the north side offer amazing mountain views. There’s a brief swing back by Core 450 and the golf shop on 11 and 12. And then starting with No. 13, it feels like you’re entering a mountain golf ride at Disney World.”

And there’s no better way to experience that ride than on one of Cherokee Valley’s wildly popular Finn Cycles. Traversing the course’s numerous hills and dales on a Finn is as close as you’ll get to feeling like a kid again. Moreover, it’s an incredibly efficient way to play golf, as you can drive directly to your ball just about anywhere other than on the green.
