The entire country is dealing with record heat this month, but the number of golf rounds played throughout the U.S. continues to surge as Americans seek safe, enjoyable outdoor entertainment for the entire family.
South Carolinians are used to sizzling summers, but Cherokee Valley is gearing up for the proverbial dog days with a variety of new additions to make golf throughout August and September not just tolerable, but downright enjoyable.
“We’re excited to further invest in the course, club and community,” says Cherokee Valley owner and director of operations Matt Jennings. “It’s been an amazing summer so far and we look forward to serving our members and guests in the weeks ahead.”
From new golf carts equipped with high-resolution GPS screens and Bluetooth speakers, to brand-new Finn Cycles for zipping around on two wheels, there’s no shortage of transportation options for a quick nine or full 18 holes.
“Golf isn’t just an activity, it’s an entertainment experience,” says Jennings. “We love to see golf groups grabbing a cart and a couple Finns and having a great time while their favorite tunes play in the background.”
And then there’s the course’s location in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Sure, it’s hot all over the state. But unlike the Lowcountry and Midlands regions, Greenville’s Blue Ridge area enjoys lower humidity and a steady breeze coming off the escarpment to the northwest.
So grab your sunscreen, favorite hat and plenty of water: here are five reasons to check out Cherokee Valley this summer.
Golfers can’t get enough of the battery-powered Finn Cycles. These two-wheel “mini bikes” are perfect for zooming up and down the hills and dales of P.B. Dye’s undulating layout at Cherokee Valley.
The original fleet of four has been expanded to include 20 new cycles. What’s more, Finns are an ideal, single-rider option for those who want to have some fun while also practicing social distancing.
And because you can drive directly to your ball (take them anywhere except for on the green), Finn Cycles also help speed up the pace of play.
Cherokee Valley recently took delivery of 35 new E-Z-GO RXV golf carts and will be receiving 20 more once the new golf shop and storage facility opens along with Core 450 this fall.
But this isn’t your father’s golf cart, to say the least.
Yes, those are JBL mounted Bluetooth speakers you see at the base of the windshield and pairing up your phone to spin your favorite playlist is a cinch. The RXV carts also feature E-Z-GO’s award-winning TFM GPS system mounted just under the roof.
The TFM touchscreens pop with vibrant, high-def hole diagrams and pin-point accurate yards to fairway landing areas, hazards and pin placements. Many golfers are playing Cherokee Valley for the first time, and GPS helps take the guess work out of club selection.
Staying hydrated on the golf course is critical during the summer months, and we recommend your primary, go-to beverage good ole H2O. But a refreshing craft beer while reliving the day’s best shots is a post round rite of passage.
We’re proud to partner with our neighbor to the north, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, to offer a variety of the Chico, Calif. and Mills River, N.C.-based brewery’s hand-crafted ales.
One of our favorites on a hot afternoon is the Hazy Little Thing. This unfiltered, unprocessed IPA packs a nice little punch, but its fruit-forward flavor profile makes it eminently refreshing. You’ll find it on tap and in cans at the grill in the Event Center.
For those who want a lighter, less alcohol-forward beer, Sierra Nevada’s Sierraveza is a golden, crisp lager with a balanced malt flavor and hint of floral hops.
Wildly popular Colorado-based brewery
New Belgium also opened an East Coast operation in Asheville, and we’re proud to partner with them to offer a full slate of their premium craft brews, as well
If there’s one thing that loves the summer heat, it’s a warm-weather grass. With night time temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s, the Bermuda fairways and Champion Bermuda greens at Cherokee Valley are flourishing. With the paucity of rain in July, the layout is playing fast and firm.
Superintendent Chad Taylor is committed to providing golfers with the absolute best playing surface year-round. In the summer, that’s Bermuda, and in the winter, Taylor oversees one of the most
ambitious overseeding operations in the Upstate.
If we’ve learned anything over the past four months, it’s that life is unpredictable. Cherokee Valley offers a variety of flexible memberships with no initiation fees or food and beverage minimums. The Platinum Family membership is a popular choice, as it includes unlimited use of the pool in addition to full golf privileges.
